Helpful Tips For Your Family Session

Uncategorized

I know that taking photos with your family can be a very stressful, unenjoyable situation. And the truth is — it doesn’t have to be. My goal as a photographer is to create a space for you and your family to enjoy the moments of your session, not dread them.

So, I wanted to round up some of my tips to help make your family session as painless and as enjoyable as possible!

  1. Make sure to arrive early to each session.
    • Since my family sessions are 45 minutes long, you are going to want to make sure that you get there a little bit early so that we can get acquainted before your session starts and your kids can get comfortable!
  2. Coordinate your outfits.
    • It’s always a good idea for any photos to have your outfits coordinate but not necessarily matching too much. You want the photos to be easy on the eyes and not too distracting. One of the things that is good to remember is to start with moms outfit. Once moms outfit is picked out you can coordinate around what she’s wearing. I always love when my clients want to use dresses from my client closet. It is an easy way that I can help make your session as smooth as possible.
  3. Bringing snacks!
    • I feel like kids are somehow always hungry. Bringing snacks to your session is always a good idea because it helps keep the kids engaged, having fun, and no hungry tummies!
  4. Follow my lead
    • Most of my sessions are designed to capture the authentic connection between you and your family. As the session is going I will start to understand the dynamic of your family and kids and do my best to lead the session in a way that caters to your needs. I don’t have a “shot list” or any type of formula! Every session is unique entirely centered around the moment. I ask you to trust me as we get to know each other and capture the essence of your family!
  5. Stay Positive, Patient, and Have Fun
    • The best photos of you and your family come when you are relaxed and open to where the session might take you. Always be smiling and have fun!! The best photos are when the people in them are genuinely enjoying the moment. It’s important to also stay positive and patient even if your kids are being difficult for you. I can assure you that I have seen it all working with children for the last 20 years and nothing confuses, surprises or upsets me. We’ll make sure to stay calm and have fun even in the craziness.
